Located at a distance of 20 kms from Bhubaneshwar, Nandankanan justifies its literal meaning i.e. “Garden of Pleasure” picturesque Nandankanan, or the Garden of the Gods, is a beautiful biological park, 20 kms from Bhubaneshwar, established in 1960. It sprawls across the Chandaka forest, where the flora and fauna flourish in their natural habitat. The park houses the very first captive gharial breeding centre of the country. The zoo at Nandakanan is world-renowned for its white tigers. In 1980, for the very first time, three white tiger cubs were born from normal coloured parents.
The tigers died between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning after being administered the injection, within the space of a few hours. Park officials gave the injection to one tiger on Sunday and the others on Monday.
Orissa chief Minister Naveen Patnaik reopened the park to visitors even though renovation and restoration work was not yet completed. Mr.Patnaik assured the park authority that his government would approach the world bank and the union environment and forest ministry for release of adequate funds to complete the renovation of the park, considered as one of the biggest natural setting park in the country.
Picturesquely carved out of the Chandaka forest, Nandankanan is a Biological Park where animals are kept in their natural habitat. A centrally located lake divides the Zoo from the Botanical Gardens. Tigers, Lions, Clouded Leopards, Black Panthers, European Brown Bear, Himalayan Black Bear, Gharials, Rosy Pelican, Grey Pelican, Indian Python, King Cobra, etc. are among the attractions of the zoo, which is famous for its White Tigers. The exotic Botanical Garden on the other side of the zoo preserves varieties of indigenous plants. Regular bus services are available to reach the place.
